BioMed, University of California open cancer research center in San Diego

The University of California San Diego (UC San Diego) and BioMed Realty have opened the Center for Novel Therapeutics (CNT) – a new cancer research center at the former’s Science Research Park in San Diego, California.

The cancer research center in San Diego, which spans 137,500sft, has been developed with an investment of $92 million by BioMed Realty, a life science real estate firm.

The Center for Novel Therapeutics is expected to operate as the newest dedicated oncology research center in San Diego. The cancer research center will be equipped with the best-in-class facilities to advance life-changing therapies for cancer patients apart from featuring the first academic-industry drug discovery incubator site in the Californian city.

The Center for Novel Therapeutics is said to include the first academic-industry drug discovery incubator site in San Diego and strengthen new treatments for cancer patients by integrating the expertise of UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center with private sector companies.

The Center for Novel Therapeutics was awarded LEED Gold Certification for incorporating high efficiency water-cooled central cooling, LED energy efficient light fixtures, and photo-voltaic solar panels.

Providing approximately 1.3 million jobs, the California state’s life science industry generated total revenue of $346 billion in 2018.

BioMed Realty is a Blackstone portfolio company that has invested approximately $1.1 billion in life science-focused real estate projects in the state of California since its privatization in 2016.
